The 'What If?' Metropolis - Online Greenlight Review

Here is my OGR! I'm so pleased I managed to reach the required amount of thumbnails. It's crazy that I've managed to do 76 in just a week! I couldn't even reach 100 over the five weeks of Invisible Cities so it's such a big improvement. I didn't quite reach 1000 words on my travelogue, and I think it does need a bit more polishing. At least it gives a basic idea of what I want the city to be like. I've named the city Alptraum, which is German for 'nightmare', and I quite like the name, although I'm going to keep looking for better ones so it may change later!

    Hi Chloe,

Indeed, look what you did in a short space of time - and the real achievement I think is conceptualising your city so strongly. I like your travelogue a lot - what a terrible place - and also, my, how beautiful it seems. Well, appearances can be deceiving! I have a couple of things to add to your thinking list as you move forwards now to creating the concept painting of your city in readiness for committing to your digital set. The first is that I encourage you to identify a 'hero prop' building that will feature in your digital set that has special significance over the buildings that might feature; by 'special signficance' I mean a building that perhaps more than any other kind, can capture the essence of the city (and maybe it's problem). One idea I had was inspired the Berlin Olympics - if you think about a place in a city dedicated to the 'best of the best' in terms of the perfect specimen, maybe the great Haeckel stadium would be a good choice? A celebration of perfection (and all that goes with that idea). It could be something else obviously, but you see my point. Something else to think about - when it comes to nazi architecture, there's one name that is infamous, and it's Albert Speer:

When it comes to Nazi architecture, there's something about how monumental it is - how massive - obviously to convey power and authority and I think you need to absolutely ensure your design and staging of your digital set has this quality - architecture as power!

I also think you need to think about the materiality of these structures - have a look at the building materials associated with classical architecture, so marble etc. and those materials that have associations with 'purity' and 'perfection' - you want these buildings to signal their perfection in terms of their fabrication too.

I look forward to seeing you move towards your concept art - go for it! :)

    1. Thanks for the feedback! I was planning on having one building above all of the others that kind of celebrates that 'perfection' idea so I'll keep working on that in my future thumbnails. I like the idea of it towering over the other buildings to show this idea that these people are somehow better than normal people. I've had a look at Albert Speer and I think I'll make an influence map on him and then add some of his work into my thumbnails and describe it in my travelogue! Lots to be getting on with, very excited I'm getting closer to making an interesting piece of concept art :)
